چکیده

Hexagonal population distributions of several sizes are shown to be selforganized from a uniformly inhabited state, which is modeled by a system of places (cities) on a hexagonal lattice. Microeconomic interactions among the places are expressed by a core–periphery model in new economic geography. Lösch’s ten smallest hexagonal distributions in central place theory are guaranteed to be existent by equivariant bifurcation analysis on D6 +̇ (Zn × Zn), and are obtained by computational analysis. The missing link between central place theory and new economic geography has thus been discovered in light of the bifurcation analysis.

Agglomeration and Tax Competition

Tax competition for a mobile factor is different in ‘new economic geography settings’ compared to standard tax competition models. The agglomeration rent which accrues to the mobile factor in the core region can be taxed. Moreover, a tax differential between the core and the periphery can be maintained. The present paper reexamines this issue in a setting which, in addition to the core-peripher...

Trade Liberalisation and Agglomeration with Firm Heterogeneity----Forward and Backward Linkages

This paper studies the impact of trade costs reduction on geographical concentration in the presence of firm heterogeneity and overhead type of export fixed costs. Firm heterogeneity with the export fixed costs hampers full agglomeration through weakening the forward and backward linkages and fortifying the market crowding effect. Rather than catastrophic agglomeration that the standard new eco...

Economic Geography and the Fiscal Effects of Regional Integration

In models of economic geography, plant-level scale economies and trade costs create incentives for spatial agglomeration of production into a manufacturing core and agricultural periphery, creating regional income differentials. We examine tax competition between national governments to influence the location of manufacturing activity. Labour is imperfectly mobile and governments impose redistr...

Agglomeration and Market Interaction∗

The most salient feature of the spatial economy is the presence of a large variety of economic agglomerations. Our purpose is to review some of the main explanations of this universal phenomenon, as they are proposed in urban economics and modern economic geography. Because of space constraints, we restrict ourselves to the most recent contributions, referring the reader to our forthcoming book...

Regional Inequality in Underdeveloped Areas: A Case Study of Guizhou Province in China

This study analyzes regional development in one of the poorest provinces in China, Guizhou Province, between 2000 and 2012 using a multiscale and multi-mechanism framework. In general, regional inequality has been declining since 2000. In addition, economic development in Guizhou Province presented spatial agglomeration and club convergence, which shows how the development pattern of core-perip...
